October marked a new chapter in the surfing scene of Los Cabos with the arrival of the first women’s surf tournament in Baja California Sur: Reina Calafia. This event represents a milestone in the region’s sports history, and Solo Baja is proud to sponsor this celebration that promotes female talent and inclusion in surfing.
Reina Calafia, held from October 4 to 6 at the beautiful La Fortuna Beach in East Cape, brought together 70 female surfers from Mexico and the United States. This event not only highlights the skills of women passionate about the sport but also promotes gender equality in a predominantly male discipline. With categories such as children, youth, and open, and disciplines ranging from shortboard and longboard to bodyboard and children’s rally, the tournament offers something for every level and style.
Inspired by the legend of the mythical warrior queen Calafia, the Reina Calafia surf tournament connects the power of local stories with the empowerment of female surfers. According to the event organizers – Mónica Olivares, Daniela Ramos, Alejandra Castellanos, and María Echeverría, along with the Surfing Association of Baja California Sur – this tournament paves the way for more women’s competitions in Baja California Sur, promoting true gender parity in the sport.
